Germany’s Landesbanken still seeking clean bill of health - Financial Times

Tuesday, April 23, 2019

One public sector bank yet to be given a clean bill of health is Hanover-based NordLB, a lender with €160bn in assets majority-owned by the German states of Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt with regional Sparkassen holding a minority stake of 35 per cent. The bank, weighed down by a vast portfolio of non-performing shipping loans, expects that it will be singled out as the weakest link in Germany’s banking system in the European Banking Authority’s stress test on Friday. “That would not be a surprise,” NordLB told the Financial Times. The lender has started to woo new investors in an attempt to raise fresh capital of about €3.5bn, with the state of Lower-Saxony standing ready to pitch in taxpayers’ money alongside external investors. Six potential bidders are conducting due diligence and have until November 28 to decide if they will table a binding offer. Among the suitors is Landesbank peer Helaba, as well as listed rival Commerzbank, private equity funds Cerberus and three other PE investors, said a person familiar with the process. “I am glad that we have different options and am open for several different scenarios,” Lower Saxony’s finance minister Reinhold Hilbers told the FT, adding that a deal with a different Landesbank as well as one with private investor...https://www.ft.com/content/d7d380cc-dcdb-11e8-9f04-38d397e6661c

Suspect in Bulgarian journalist slaying arrested in Germany

Wednesday, October 17, 2018

Wednesday. Bulgaria's prosecutor general, Sotir Tsatsarov, confirmed the arrest of Severin Krassimirov, a 21-year-old Bulgarian citizen. Prosecutors in the northwestern German state of Lower Saxony said the suspect was arrested Tuesday evening outside the city of Hamburg on a European arrest warrant. Prosecutors will examine whether he can be extradited and apply to have him held in formal custody. Bulgarian Interior Minister MladenMarinov said investigators had found DNA evidence on the clothes and body of Viktoria Marinova, who was raped and strangled on Saturday in the northern town of Ruse. Bulgarian media reported that Krassimirov's mother lives in Germany. The Interior Ministry said that he left Bulgaria early Saturday afternoon, crossing the bridge at Ruse over the Danube into Romania. There is physical evidence to link to the murder,Marinov said. He said Krassimirov, a resident of Ruse, had a criminal record for scrap metal theft. The minister said investigators had spoken to Marinova's family and friends and there is no apparent link to her work. Tsatsarov said the evidence suggested it was a spontaneous attack, not premeditated. However, he added that investigators were examining all possible lines of investigation. Prime Minister Boyko Borissov offered condolences to her family and thanked investigators for their work. However, he said he would withdraw his support for a German member of the European Parliament, Manfred Weber, a leading candidate to become the next head of the European Commission, because of tweets he made associating the death of Marinova with those of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia and Slovak journalist Jan Kuci...https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/suspect-in-bulgarian-journalist-slaying-arrested-in-germany-1.4127762

German authorities take aim at far-right party's youth wing

Thursday, September 13, 2018

Constitution and observe them accordingly." Authorities in northern Germany's Bremen and Lower Saxony said Monday they have begun monitoring the party's youth wings in the two states. Boris Pistorius, Lower Saxony's interior minister, said the decision to keep an eye on the AfD's local youth wing, was unrelated to the recent events in Chemnitz. It was based on Young Alternative's anti-democratic goals and links to the Identitarian Movement, a white nationalist group that has been under state surveillance for four years, Pistorius said. His counterpart in Bremen, Ulrich Maeurer, described the views of AfD's youth wing in the city-state as "pure racism." While Germany's top security official, Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, said over the weekend that the party as a whole didn't merit surveillance, the monitoring of its youth wings at the state level was a significant step. Some members of the Left party, which describes its position as democratic socialist, also are subject to surveillance. AfD immediately announced that it would dissolve the two youth sections in question to avert harm to the party and insisted its aims were democratic. Andreas Kalbitz , a member of the party's national leadership, accused other political parties of panicking in the face of AfD's electoral success. AfD's rise since its founding five years ago has shaken Germany's establishment and called into question the country's post-World War II consensus that far-right parties have no place in the mainstream. https://www.sfchronicle.com/news/crime/article/Thousands-expected-to-German-concert-against-far-13200978.php

A Girl's Killing Puts Germany's Migration Policy on Trial - New York Times

Friday, April 13, 2018

Ms. Weigel’s sense of insecurity was reinforced by a widely publicized study showing that the number of reported crimes in the state of Lower Saxony had risen by more than 10 percent over the past two years and that the increase could be attributed overwhelmingly to cases involving refugees. #g-0116-for-web-MURDERmap-box .g-artboard { margin:0 auto; } #g-0116-for-web-MURDERmap-box .g-artboard p { margin:0; } .g-aiAbs { position:absolute; } .g-aiImg { display:block; width:100% !important; } .g-aiPointText p { white-space: nowrap; } #g-0116-for-web-MURDERmap-300 { position:relative; overflow:hidden; width:300px; } #g-0116-for-web-MURDERmap-300 p { font-family:nyt-franklin,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-weight:500; font-size:14px; line-height:16px; height:auto; filter:alpha(opacity=100); -ms-filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Alpha(Opacity=100); opacity:1; mix-blend-mode:normal; letter-spacing:0.125em; text-align:left; color:rgb(0,0,0); text-transform:none; padding-bottom:0; padding-top:0; font-style:normal; } #g-0116-for-web-MURDERmap-300 .g-pstyle0 { font-size:10px; line-height:11px; height:11px; mix-blend-mode:multiply; text-align:center; } #g-0116-for-web-MURDERmap-300 .g-pstyle1 { font-style:italic; font-size:11px; line-height:13px; height:13px; mix-blend-mode:multiply; letter-spacing:0.05em; text-align:center; color:rgb(98,140,178); } #g-0116-for-web-MURDERmap-300 .g-pstyle2 { font-size:15px; line-height:18px; height:18px; mix-blend-mode:multiply; text-align:center; } #g-0116-for-web-MURDERmap-300 .g-pstyle3 { font-style:italic; font-size:12px; line-height:14px; height:14px; mix-blend-mode:multiply; letter-spacing:0em; text-transform:uppercase; } #g-0116-for-web-MURDERmap-300 .g-pstyle4 { height:16px; mix-blend-mode:multiply; text-align:center; } #g-0116-for-web-MURDERmap-300 .g-pstyle5 { font-size:12px; line-height:14px; height:14px; mix-blend-mode:multiply; letter-spacing:0em; text-align:right; } #g-0116-for-web-MURDERmap-300 .g-pstyle6 { font-size:12px; line-height:14px; height:14px; mix-blend-mode:multiply; letter-spacing:0em; } #g-0116-for-web-MURDERmap-300 .g-pstyle7 { font-weight:700; font-size:15px; line-height:18px; height:18px; mix-blend-mode:multiply; letter-spacing:0.02em; } #g-0116-for-web-MURDERmap-300 .g-pstyle8 { font-style:italic; font-size:12px; line-height:14px; height:14px; mix-blend-mode:multiply; letter-spacing:0em; text-align:center; text-transform:uppercase; } img id="g-0...
