Chemnitz: Syrian asylum-seeker convicted of killing that sparked far-right riots - DW (English)

Sunday, January 26, 2020

SindMehr If you weren't looking for it, you might not even notice the plaque for Daniel H. on the broad sidewalk of Chemnitz's Brückenstrasse that marks the spot where he died. The small silver metal plate, engraved with a peace symbol, has replaced a pool of candles and flowers that were laid here for days in the aftermath of the death. But a lot has happened in Chemnitz since last summer. Concerts and exhibitions emphasizing tolerance, diversity and openness have come thick and fast. In July this year, the center of the city was transformed into a festival ground for the Kosmos concert, this time under the hashtag #WirBleibenMehr ("We will remain more"). In the same vein, the city festival that was abruptly cut short last year will be replaced this weekend with a three-day street festival, entitled Herzschlag - Chemnitz lebt! ("Heartbeat – Chemnitz is alive!"), organized not by the city but by a local initiative. Educational projects The city authorities, with support from the federal government, have also invested more money in cultural and educational projects. One of these is Chemnitz Open Space, and can be found right behind the giant sculpture of Karl Marx's head, both Chemnitz's most famous landmark and the focal point for any demonstration — including the far-right protest that sparked so much trouble last year. Opened in May, Chemnitz Open Space allows local artists and activists to put on exhibitions and workshops meant to foster the city's democratic culture. (One exhibition inside details Chemnitz's connections with the National Socialist Underground terrorist organization). One of the project managers is Rebecca Dathe, who was spending Wednesday afternoon planting new plants in the grassy area next to Karl Marx — the same lawn where hundreds of far-right extremists and riot police officers had stood a year ago. Community awareness has heightened; Dathe describes how, until last summer, many people in Chemnitz would simply accept that their neighbors or friends had far-right opinions. "The events last year caused many people to get more engaged more politically," she says. "You noticed that the incidents showed that people are dealing with far-right extremism more consciously. They don't just look away." Read more: Chemnitz trial begins amid questions of impartiality The anti-tolerance backlash That much was backed up by Franz Knoppe, project director for the Chemnitz cultural and educational organization ASA-FF, the "Network for Global Learning." "There are a lot or people working on this, seeking out space for dialogue, spaces to tell stories," he told DW. "And a lot of the events are really full. A lot is happening." The Chemnitz Open Space forum and exhibition room, directly behind the spot where far-right demos took place last year, hopes to educate and foster dialogue But beneath these efforts at political engagement in Chemnitz, the politics in the city can't be hidden. The results of the city council election in May this year returned the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) 18% of the vote, a close second to the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU). That doesn't sound that much, except that the far-right group Pro Chemnitz, which includes some neo-Nazis, and which organized last year's far-right demo in the wake of Daniel H.'s death, took another 8% and now has five of the 60 seats in the city council. However, Purple Heart Veterans who already have these plates on their vehicle like I do may still receive a letter from the Department of Licensing indicating they still need to pay for their annual registration. If this occurs all you need to do is take the letter into your local licensing office along with your driver’s license and they will issue you a new vehicle registration along with the permanent yellow tabs to place on your license plate. Jim Curtis North Bend Card of thanks Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all the many friends and family that attended Dad’s “celebration of life.” Mom, and all of us Martys were overwhelmed by all of the love and support...https://www.valleyrecord.com/letters/letters-to-the-editor-aug-9-2019/

Darina Allen: Sweet and savoury recipes using beetroot - Irish Examiner

Tuesday, August 20, 2019

This beetroot dip is irresistible, a brilliant standby to have to scoop up with pitta or as part of a mezza plate. Chunks of beetroot add deliciousness and nutrients to a tray of roast vegetables. The Sri Lankans make some of the best vegetable curry and I featured my favourite Beetroot curry from Sunhouse in Galle on the May 25 (rebrand.ly/va7m9m).Beetroot crisps are also irresistible, remember to cook them at 160C rather than the 180C for potato crisps. Then there’s the bonus of the stalks and leaves from the summer beets, chop the stalks and cook in boiling salted water for a few minutes, slather with extra virgin olive oil, add freshly chopped herbs and chilli, delicious and a favourite on Fergus Henderson’s menu at St John in London. The leaves can be cooked like spinach either in well-salted water on a frying pan over a high heat.If you are lucky to have a glut, then let’s pickle, who doesn’t love homemade beetroot pickle? So different to the harsh vinegary pickle of childhood memories. It’ll last for months to embellish goats cheese, smoked fish or salads and there’s the extra feel-good factor of having pickled your own. Check out my recipe suggestions.Beetroot KvassThis is a slightly sour/salty tonic of a deep-red colour known to help clean the liver and purify the blood.2 large beetroot1½ litres (2½ pints) filtered water (or non-chlorinated)2 tsp sea salt50ml (2fl oz) starter — this could be whey, water kefir, sauerkraut juice or kombuchaScrub the beetroot but do not peel. Chop into small chunks — 2cm (¾ inch) cubes (roughly). Put into a 2 litre Kilner jar or something similar with a lid. Add the water, sea salt and starter and secure the lid tightly.Allow to sit in a warming undisturbed place for about five days. Bubbles will start to appear (fermentation is taking a hold) — taste it after day three, if it is to your liking. Strain out the beetroot chunks. Bottle and store in the fridge once it reaches the desired sourness.Rory O’Connell’sChilled Ruby Beetroot Soup Hopefully your decision to make this soup will coincide with a warm day, as scorching shaded lunches or long balmy evenings are the perfect weather conditions for enjoying this soup, though I can enjoy it almost as much in less clement weather conditions. If you come across golden beetroots, they can be used in exactly the same way as the ruby variety, though they must be cooked separately as the ruby beetroot will bleed into the golden and render them pink, which would re...https://www.irishexaminer.com/breakingnews/lifestyle/foodanddrink/darina-allen-sweet-and-savoury-recipes-using-beetroot-943069.html
